Live Wise consists of a series of six life-stage self-care/health promotion kits addressing preventive health issues common to each respective group-pre-pregnancy (women of childbearing age), newborns, toddlers, teens, adults, and seniors. The Live Wise target populations are adults and their families residing in underserved communities in Southern California.

Available in English and Spanish, the program is supported by corollary marketing and training materials and is evaluated via a database incorporating user satisfaction and utilization measures. All kits contain an audiotape, health education informational sheets, and a kit evaluation card.

Specific health behaviors addressed include: healthy eating, regular use of multivitamins, smoking cessation, limitation of caffeine, exercise, use of sunscreen, use of protection before sex, implementing child safety measures at home, use of good parenting skills, managing medications, and keeping regularly scheduled physician checkups.

Since inception in the Fall of 2000, 1077 Kits have been distributed and 118 evaluations have been received. The evaluations had the following results: 70.3% indicated that the program increased their level of confidence levels when making decisions about health; 21.2% indicated that the program assisted them or other family members in making positive health changes; and 19.5% indicated that the kit directed them to the appropriate health care resources.
