National Network of Public Health Institutes- Multi-sector approaches to fostering innovations that improve health

Joseph D. Kimbrell, MA, LCSW, Chief Executive Officer, National Network of Public Health Institutes, 1600 Canal Street, Suite 501, New Orleans, LA 70112, (504) 539-9481, jkimbrell@lphi.org

Over the course of the past several years a new breed of public health organization has emerged, committed to improving the public's health through state-of-the-art research, demonstrations, collaborations, evaluations, and training. This new organization is the Public Health Institute, a nonprofit, multi-sector entity that relies upon partnerships and collaborations between federal, state, and local public health agencies, universities, foundations, and other health-related organizations to foster innovations that improve health. In April 2001, the leaders of the individual state institutes, recognizing they share common goals and objectives, formally established the National Network of Public Health Institutes (NNPHI). The mission of NNPHI is to promote multi-sector activities resulting in measurable improvements of public health structures, systems, and outcomes. The National Network of Public Health Institutes seeks to explore these initiatives by partnering with national, state and local public health organizations.

This presentation will address the history and strategic directions of NNPHI, various Public Health Institute models, and alternative infrastructure models to approaching the population-based public health agenda from a public health administration point of view.

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to: understand the roles of NNPHI and Public Health Institutes; articulate examples of multi-sector approaches to alternative organizational structures; understand the resources of the NNPHI, utilize tips on how to establish a Public Health Institute; and receive contact information for the existing institutes.
