According to the CDC, tobacco is expected to account for approximately 7 million deaths in developing countries each year by 2030. Increases in global tobacco marketing and subsequent mortality due to smoking have led national and international agencies to coordinate comprehensive tobacco control efforts. These programs have become increasingly comprehensive and targeting broader objectives such as social and political change, in addition to prevalence rates and per capita consumption measures. The Social Climate Survey of Tobacco Control provides both a planning and evaluation tool which could enhance these efforts. The purpose of the survey is to measure and ultimately monitor the fundamental position of tobacco control in a society. The Social Climate Survey of Tobacco assesses normative beliefs about tobacco use, public and private clean air practices, and health beliefs within important societal institutions, such as the household, education, work place, and recreational settings. Researchers and practitioners in Mississippi developed the survey to enhance the evaluation of the Mississippi Tobacco Pilot Program. The cross-sectional survey is now administered annually to a representative national and state sample. The researchers are currently collaborating with both state and national organizations to disseminate and apply the findings from these surveys. This session will highlight the potential of this social climate approach as a planning and evaluation tool for international tobacco control efforts.
