In this session we will present an overview of working with Native American communities in Oklahoma, and have a discussion of the traditional use of tobacco in Native culture. Based on our years of experience and a wide variety of research projects conducted by our research team with Native American communities engaged in tobacco prevention and control efforts, we will present a case study highlighting the value of, the history and the principles of participatory research. Significant contributions to our research and this presentation were from the vast knowledge of culture and tradition from our advisors, elders and consultants on this project. Attendees will have the opportunity to experience activities designed to illustrate participatory techniques and methods.
Participatory research is a method used to assess, analyze, plan, evaluate and take action in a community. This systematic inquiry is completed with the cooperation of community members who are affected by the issue being studied. Due to the unique role of tobacco in Native American culture, participatory research is crucial to evaluate and enhance the capacity for tobacco control within tribal communities
