Creating Web-based training programs: Lessons learned

This presentation describes the steps involved in developing online courses on substance abuse prevention. It discusses how topics were identified, how research was conducted, and how the courses were developed. It reviews steps involved in content development, such as research, development of objectives, development of text and graphics, and expert reviews. It also discusses design issues, such as navigation, template development, selection of fonts, colors, and layout, and development of interactive elements. It also discusses challenges, such as making continuing education units available, in terms of programming constraints.

The tutorials are funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Center for Substance Abuse Prevention. They break new ground by providing training material on rarely addressed topics to mass audiences. The discussion will include issues such as compliance with laws and regulations requiring accessibility by persons with disabilities are also addressed.

The tutorials include special features such as case studies, interactive exercises and quizzes, and videos. The presentation will describe how these features were created, looking at content development and Web design issues. In addition, the presentation will review incorporation of databases and related programming.

The presentation will also describe issues related to usability testing and evaluation. Development of usability testing instruments and online evaluation tools will be discussed. Finally, synthesizing results and incorporating them into the final product will be described.
