The presence and prevalence of firearms in households across America today is presenting a serious public health concern to the healthcare system, healthcare providers, and to the nation's children. It is staggering to think that 14 children each day across our nation are killed by gunfire. Implications are that firearms decrease years of life and quality of life. Healthy People 2010 has as one of its major goals to increase years of life and quality of life. Education is cited by the American Academy of Pediatrics as one viable intervention to help achieve this goal. The focus of this graduate public health nursing project is to educate school aged children who live in the Logan section of Philadelphia on gun safety and injury prevention. This educational program is entitled "GUN SAFETY: It's NO Accident." The program utilizes video, slides, and printed material as developed by the Emergency Nurses Association. This program is implemented in the classroom setting by a Certified School Nurse. The 2001-2002 initiative has the potential to reduce the incidence of injuries and deaths to children by firearms in this high risk Philadelphia neighborhood.
