This presentation will describe the results of analyses testing assumptions of the Healthy Eating and Exercise to Reduce Diabetes (HEED) project. A goal of the HEED project is to increase resources and reduce barriers to healthy meal planning and preparation. Based on observational and anecdotal information that a wide selection of affordable, high-quality fruits and vegetables are not available to residents of the east side of Detroit, one HEED project activity is selling high-quality fruits and vegetables at a reasonable cost to community members through mini-markets. Using data from a random sample survey of women living on Detroit's east side conducted by the ESVHWP, we will examine the relationship between fruit and vegetable consumption and 1) the availability of grocery stores in the neighborhood and 2) the availability, affordability, and quality of fruits and vegetables at neighborhood grocery stores. We will discuss implications for the future focus and activities of the project.
