An ounce of substance abuse prevention is worth a pound of cure. That sound bit of public health wisdom would seem congruent with the interest of any health care provider organization in reducing its own need to fund costly-and frequently recurrent-treatment interventions. SAMHSA's Center for Substance Abuse Prevention fosters prevention in the workplace health care environment by collaborating with workplaces, health care providers and organizations, employee assistance programs, human resource personnel, unions, private security, management, and others to ascertain best practices in prevention and early intervention and dissemination of these practices to workplaces nationwide. Based on a CSAP-funded grant program, CSAP is currently sharing its GET FIT @ SAMHSA health promotion/substance abuse prevention interactive website which is tailored specifically for large to small businesses, unions and health care organizations. This presentation addresses this intervention along with other cost-beneficial substance abuse prevention and early intervention activities in the evolving workplace and health care environment.
