Phyllis Scattergood and Scott G. Pulizzi. Health and Human Development Programs, Education Development Center, Inc., 55 Chapel Street, Newton, MA 02458-1060
Education International [EI] is the worlds largest teacher trade union with 24 million members. In 1995 EI formed an alliance with WHO, UNESCO, CDC, Education Development Center, and [1996] UNAIDS to share capacities and knowledge to improve the effectiveness of HIV/STI prevention efforts through schools. In partnership with ministries of health and education, regional HIV prevention seminars have taken place in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Botswana, Togo and Senegal .
In this session participants will acquire knowledge about partnerships among global organizations, public health and education sectors. Through the design and application of country-driven participatory methods, EI and partners have worked together to strengthen skills, disseminate accurate information and design culturally-appropriate approaches to reduce the risk for HIV/STI in the African education sector.
The epidemic has hit young people the hardest. Those between 15-24 years old comprise 50% of all new infections around the globe. AIDS has challenged public health infrastructures and reversed achievements drastically reducing the school age population. In the most affected countries in Southern Africa numbers of primary school children enrolled in schools is expected to drop by 20%.*
This session will enable participants to strengthen existing public health and education partnerships for implementing and institutionalizing effective interventions that can reduce the risk for HIV/STI and related discrimination through schools.
