Purpose: Breastfeeding provides significant health advantages for mother and child. While support for breastfeeding remains a vital intervention area in UNICEF programming, this may not be immediately evident in the current Mid-Term Strategic Plan (MTSP). Data/information used: This presentation will discuss the current strategic approach of UNICEF as outlined in the MTSP, and how it supports maternal and child health within the Integrated Early Childhood Development rationale. Method: Available program and survey data and case studies will be used to illustrate the revised strategic plan supports breastfeeding in general and within HIV-endemic areas. Results: These examples clarify that many strategic rationales, other that health alone, may be used to support breastfeeding. Implications: Conclusions and discussion will address how breastfeeding, safe motherhood and family planning program and policy planners might build upon the I/ECD approach to strengthen the rationale for support of breastfeeding, the mother-child dyad, and health and survival of under 3 year olds.
