Community-based participatory research (CBPR) is a promising approach for university-based researchers who conduct research in community settings. CBPR may be distinguished from community-placed research approaches. “Community-placed” refers to research that occurs within communities but is developed by academic researchers without participation of community members in the development process. In contrast, CBPR involves the inclusion of community participants from the outset as co-equals in the research, an emphasis on long-term commitments among the researchers and community partners, and the incorporation of social ecology principles - both to enhance the research process and to surface and address the many challenges interventions face when they are community-based and directed at the social context in which communities exist.

The session will elaborate on compromises that are oft times inherent to the application of CBPR in practice and will focus on the unintended consequences for university based researchers striving to conduct CBPR. The presentation will be grounded in our current work that is producing measures for community capacity and will provide suggestions for minimizing such consequences.
