Current directions for youth violence reduction are to implement research-based prevention strategies guided by ongoing, comprehensive evaluation. The Bullying Prevention Program, a Blueprints program for violence prevention, is currently being implemented through a community partnership of Philadelphia Physician’s for Social Responsibility and The School District of Philadelphia. Philadelphia Physician's for Social Responsibility provides a program coordinator for teacher training and program expertise. The School District of Philadelphia provides program supervision. Seven elementary and middle schools within Philadelphia are participating in the program. The Bullying Prevention Program commences with a student needs assessment to determine characteristics of bullying for each school. School, class and individual level interventions are planned based on areas and behaviors most frequently associated with bullying. Impact evaluation is being monitored through annual school surveys and behavioral observations. Outcome evaluation is being monitored through serious incident reports, detentions, and student absences. Formative evaluation is being monitored through school coordinating committees and fidelity of implementation. Baseline data is currently being collected during the 2001/2002 school year. Although, individual school data are not generalizable, the current program provides a model for other school-based violence prevention programs.
