This presentation will describe activities undertaken to address childhood asthma in New Jersey as part of the federal/state collaboration to address asthma in USDHHS Region II. The most significant activities in New Jersey as the result of this initiative have been: the establishment of an asthma surveillance activity in the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services, with the assistance of a CDC Cooperative Agreement; public/private collaboration through the formation of the Pediatric Asthma Coalition of New Jersey, facilitated by the American Lung Association of New Jersey; and development by an interdepartment work group of State agencies of a Strategic Plan for addressing asthma in the state. Coalition activities have resulted in the development of a model asthma action plan for schools and child care centers, a diagnostic worksheet for physicians, and a training program for school nurses delivered statewide via satellite broadcast.
