This presentation contains an analytical summary of the health situation and trends in the Americas for the 1950-2000 period. Using selected health and demographic indicators, this situation analysis underscores key important demographic and mortality changes in the different sub-regions of the Americas. During this period, marked changes occurred in total fertility, infant mortality and life expectancy, with their consequent impact in population structure and human development. In spite of the improvement of average health and living conditions, the Americas also showed important health inequalities between and within countries. The demographic re-shape and changes in the health burden, shifting from the communicable diseases profile to the chronic and external causes ones is unique in the Americas. This knowledge is essential for assisting policy makers and health managers in the formulation of sound policies and interventions.
