During spring 2002, we are exploring the use of Internet Protocol-based (IP) videoconferencing technology to facilitate distance collaborative learning in an academic-credit course. The students were in their homes, while the professor was either in a special electronic classroom, in his office, or at home. The course, Healthcare Financial Management, combined lecture with individual and group problem solving exercises both inside and outside of class time. Outside of class, students were free to conduct their own videoconferences with each other without assistance or scheduling by the School. Students used Excel to develop financial models, and presented their results using Excel and/or PowerPoint to the faculty member and other students during synchronous videoconference sessions.

Planning the pedagogy required considering the interplay between group assignments, class activities and outside of class activities and the curriculum was modified to take advantage of the new capabilities. The role of the student, the role of the group, and the role of the professor during class time and outside of class came under scrutiny and the curriculum was modified accordingly.

We will share an assessment of the experience by the faculty and students involved based on personal experience, and gathered through feedback surveys and focus group discussions.
