Abstract #45196

Changes in Health in the Americas during the Last 100 Years

A. David Brandling-Bennett, MD, Deputy Director, Pan American Health Organization, 525 23rd St, NW, Washington, DC 22037, 202-974-3178, bennetdb@paho.org

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) was established in December 1902 "to promote and coordinate efforts of the countries of the Western Hemisphere to combat disease, lengthen life, and promote the physical and mental health of the people." During the past 100 years, steady improvements in health were seen in all populations in the Americas, as evidenced by many indicators, including infant mortality and life expectancy. The control of communicable diseases, especially in childhood, improved nutrition, and better water and sanitation systems contributed to these gains. Notable accomplishments include the eradication of smallpox in 1971 and wild poliovirus in 1991, the near eradication of measles in 2001-2002, and the development of strategies to control other infectious diseases. As a result, the demographic and health profile of the region is changing, with aging populations and the more frequent occurrence of non-communicable diseases. At the same time, health gains have not benefited populations uniformly, and disparities between and within countries have widened in many cases. In some countries, investments in health remain low, while in most the achievements are below those expected for the investments being made. PAHO and it 39 Member States face the challenge of addressing these evolving challenges so that inequities are reduced and all people in the Americas achieve optimal health during the 21st century.
