Sandra E. Gálvez, MSW, Alameda County Public Health Department, 7200 Bancroft Ave., Suite 202, Oakland, CA 94605, 510-577-7092, sangalv@co.alameda.ca.us

A community-driven mini-grant program was established in the underserved Ashland community of Alameda County as a collaborative project between the Alameda County Public Health Department (Health Department) and its community partner, Safe Ashland Neighborhood Organization (Safe Ashland). This presentation will demonstrate how resident participation resulted in empowerment and community capacity building. Through this program small grants were awarded to residents that developed new projects to serve the Ashland community. This program met several objectives. The collaborative program strengthened the partnership between the Health Department and Safe Ashland. The mini-grant program aided community capacity building in Ashland by providing leadership opportunities to residents through involvement in the grantmaking committee or as grant recipients. The larger Ashland community benefited from five innovative projects created and implemented by fellow residents. All of these projects are ongoing. This program also developed Health Department staff's community capacity building skills. Lessons learned regarding the development and operation of a community mini-grant program with specific emphasis on maintaining a community-driven process, will be discussed, along with a review of a case study of one of the more successful mini-grant projects.
