Abstract #45373

Informing research dissemination & diffusion with audience input through concept mapping

Jon Kerner, PhD and Cynthia Vinson, MPA. DCCPS, National Cancer Institute, 6130 Executive Boulevard, Rockville, MD 20852, 301.594.7294, kernerj@mail.nih.gov

As part of the NCI’s Translating Research into Improved Outcomes (TRIO), the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences has made a substantial investment in:

1)Identifying target audiences for dissemination of the knowledge gained from and intervention products generated by cancer epidemiology, surveillance and intervention research; 2)Obtaining audience input as to how science can help improve the quality and impact of cancer control program activities and what are the best formats for delivering scientific information and evidence-based intervention products; 3)Analyzing audience information to improve our science communication strategies, to develop ancillary dissemination products to tailor findings from scientific knowledge synthesis reports for specific audiences, and to design decision tools for program planners and administrators to make informed decisions about which evidence-based intervention approaches and products are best used in particular setting with specific populations.

In this presentation, an overview of the TRIO program will be provided, along with a description of new NCI funding opportunities for research dissemination and diffusion. Several examples of concept mapping projects will be described highlighting one or more of three investment areas of audience identification and analysis and how we are proceeding forward to use this information in future research and dissemination program activities. Session participants will be asked to provide advice and comment to NCI on how to improve and expand this investment in audience needs assessment and program evaluation for research dissemination and diffusion.
