In Zambia, 53% of the deliveries occur at home due to logistical, cultural and financial reasons. These deliveries have been associated with unclean practices. WHO states that about two thirds of neonatal infections are attributed to unclean practices. A Clean Delivery Kit (CDK), affordable by the majority of the community was proposed. Two Church Mission Non Governmental Organizations were selected sites where in-depth interviews were held with community and religious leaders, Neighbourhood Health Committees, Community Health Workers and health centre staff to determine the feasibility of a CDK program. A kit was subsequently designed. A field trial followed to get feedback from mothers and Traditional Birth Attendants on the acceptability and appropriateness and user friendliness of the kit. The kit was one part of a comprehensive program that included education on clean delivery practices and system for distribution and sustainability. In one of the communities with a population of 42,100 of the 300 expected deliveries in 2001, 110 mothers purchased and used the kit. This program has potential benefit for improving hygienic delivery practices in low resource areas.
