Family is where the children grow up and get socialization. Researches show that family interaction between parents and children plays important role on children°¦s mental well-being. The purposes of this study were to understand the family interaction pattern in 4th graders, and also to examine the relationship between family interaction and their mental health status (depression, social loneliness, and social anxiety). As part of the °§Child and Adolescent Behaviors in Long-term Evolution (CABLE)°¨ Study, data of 1992 4th grader in Taipei City and Hsin-Chu County, Taiwan, which were collected by self-administrated questionnaire were taken into analysis. Compare to children lived in rural area, those who live in urban area had better family interaction and family support but also more punishment. There°¦s no significant urban-rural difference on depression, social loneliness, and social anxiety. With higher family interaction and family support, children tended to have significantly lower depression, social loneliness, and social anxiety score. For those who suffered from home violence and received more punishment from parents, their mental health statuses were significantly unhealthier (with higher scores). Further multivariate analysis will be done to strengthen the relationship of family interaction and children°¦s mental health..
