The government of Bangladesh has approved introduction of emergency contraception in the national family planning program. An OR was conducted by the Directorate of Family Planning, Government of Bangladesh, Population Council, Pathfinder International and JSI to answer several operational questions that need to be answered before its integration with national program. The key questions were: who should provide ECP? Are the grass root workers and Depotholders are suitable for this? After training will they communicate correctly about ECP to their clients? What training need to be given and for what duration? What should be the contents of the training? Two hundreds and ninety grass root workers were interviewed three times- first, before they were given training; second, immediately after two days training and the third, after four months of the 1st training. The baseline findings of this study were presented in the 129th Annual Meeting of APHA. End-line findings suggest that grass root providers are capable of receiving and assimilating the information on ECP. Similarly, they are also capable of communicating correct information on ECP recieved during the training. However, refresher training is particularly needed after a period of one month. The study also found that service providers need reorientation on the contraceptive technology updates and counseling skills while suppose to provide ECP services. It is recommended that if the training program is integrated in ongoing family planning training program, the duration of training could be reduced to half-day.
