The residents of Warren County, NC are credited with beginning the Environmental Justice (EJ) movement in 1982 by joining forces with environmentalists and civil rights activists to fight the creation of a PCB landfill. One of the principles of EJ is to educate present and future generations about social and environmental issues based on experiences and appreciation of diverse cultural perspectives. Warren Family Institute partnered with a public health graduate student to create EJ education kits for use by community groups. Finding that existing videos on the topic were not locally relevant, Warren County youths, ages 10-13, were recruited to create a video about the landfill and the protests. The result was a "kids talk show" video, conceived, filmed and performed by young people. Scenes from the video will be shown. The lessons learned about adults establishing partnerships with youth that will be discussed include: (1) enthusiastic but short attention spans can pose a challenge to in-depth focus group discussions, reviewing archival data, and the number of "takes" required during filming; (2) guidelines to protect human subjects in non-medical research can complicate trust-building with youth and their parents; and (3) for adult viewers, the credibility of a video made by and for youth may be compromised, but for community youth groups, other young people are a more credible source than the “experts.”
