The United States is at a critical juncture in tobacco prevention and control. Never has it been more important to have sound evidence of what works to reduce and prevent tobacco use. NCI awarded approximately $20 million annually for its largest anti-smoking initiative, Research in State and Community Tobacco Control Interventions. These 19 grants will support research on innovative tobacco prevention and control interventions at the community, state, or multi-state level, and emphasize collaboration between tobacco control researchers and state-based tobacco control programs. These grants are studying the effects of interventions in youth, young adults, and long-term smokers, particularly emphasizing communication and policy-oriented studies. Findings will be extremely useful in guiding the future of state and community-based tobacco control interventions.

This presentation will provide a brief overview of this initiative, and address some highlights of numerous projects so that participants will have a better understanding of policy and media research to pursue further. A major focus is developing collaborations between researchers and public health practitioners at all levels to ensure that the results are widely disseminated and implemented to reduce tobacco use.
