Variations in inpatient utilization for asthma patients in texas

This session shall review the evidence from the Texas Health Care Information Council data from 2000 that there is a disparity in the average length of stay for asthma patients of varying insurance coverage. Specific comparison shall be directed to similar age and gender groups within Commercial insurance plans and within Medicaid insurance plans. Information shall be compared to Texas HEDIS data reported by the various health plans for a comparative analysis of managed care reporting to hospital report. Insurance coverage may be a related to geographic location. Therefore, this session will also review the variations in hospital utilization for asthma conditions in the geographic locations within the State of Texas. Geographic areas will be reviewed by size, location (relationship to the border), urban vs rural, census data, and other variables that may account for disparities. Both issues shall be compared to benchmarks from HEDIS and from national studies. The Texas Health Care Information Council database contains over 2.5 million records on hospital discharges in 2000 collected from over 400 hospitals in Texas.
