The subjective dimension in outcome measurement has become an important area of concern for many researchers in the field of public health. Subjective constructs such as satisfaction, importance, choice, independence, quality of participation, quality of life, and well-being are increasingly evident in the literature. However, consensus has not been reached on the measurement, assessment, and use of subjective qualifiers. Consequently, related research efforts are being increasingly supported by numerous organizations to collect empirical data and to incorporate conceptually, the subjective experiences into models of disability. One such example is the International Study Group on Subjective Dimension of Functioning and Disability, which was approved in 2001 by the World Health Organization Collaborating Centers for the Family of International Classifications (WHO/FIC). As members of this working group, the presenters will provide an overview of the group objectives and activities. Additionally, findings will be discussed from a detailed literature review and data collected in conjunction with the group’s work. Implications on disability-related measurement, data collection, and classification will be discussed.
