Abstract #46184

A tale of four health departments: First-hand experiences with community health governance

Jerry Andrews, Macon County Health Department, 1221 East Condit, Decatur, IL 62521, 217-423-6988 X127, JCADog@aol.com, Eve R. Cagan, MPH, New York City Department of Health, 40 Worth Street, Room 1607, New York City, NY 10013, Jared Florance, MD, Prince William Health District, 9301 Lee Ave., Manassas, VA 20110, and Shelia J. None of the local health departments (LHDs) in the Community Health Governance Workgroup initially became involved in the Turning Point initiative with the explicit intention of developing an independent, community-driven process to improve community health. So why did the Workgroup communities take this route, and why are the LHDs in these communities supporting the effort? In this presentation, LHD representatives will describe the evolution of, and specific approaches to, community health governance (CHG) in four very different communities: Decatur, IL; Prince William, VA; New Orleans, LA; and New York City, NY. The presenters will discuss the specific roles their LHD is playing in developing, and participating in, the CHG process — paying particular attention to how these roles are similar to, and different from, collaborations in which the LHD has previously been involved. They will give examples of the challenges that this community-driven process poses for the staff and programs of their LHD as well as the benefits their LHD is experiencing as a result of participating in the CHG process.
