Abstract #46210

Ventilation versus smokefree policies: A new battleground for clean indoor air

Cynthia Hallett, MPH and Tim Filler. Executive Director, American Nonsmokers' Rights Foundation, 2530 San Pablo Avenue, J, Berkeley, CA 94702, 510-841-3045, ch@no-smoke.org

Research demonstrates that smokefree policies reduce tobacco consumption by adults, prevents youth from starting to smoke, and protects employees from exposure to a known carcinogen. Research and experience tells us that any attempt to reduce tobacco consumption and, therefore, the sale of tobacco, is vehemently opposed by the tobacco industry. This presentation examines the tobacco industry's promotion of ventilation technology as one of its primary tactics to oppose and prevent strong clean indoor air policies. Participants will receive background information and documentation on: the ASHRAE indoor air ventilation standard; the ineffectiveness of ventilation technology to protect nonsmokers from the hazards of secondhand smoke; the tobacco industry's various tactics to promote ventilation options and bureaucratic procedures to undermine strong clean indoor air policies; and tools to counter industry tactics.
