The Columbia-Suwannee Cancer Prevention Outreach Project (CSCPOP) target Columbia and Suwannee counties, two poor rural counties in North Florida. The rates of breast, cervical, colorectal and prostate cancer are one and one-half to two times higher among Blacks in this area than among their White counterparts. Tackling the health disparities of African Americans in rural communities require a community effort. Many communities are suspicious of research projects that usually "study people to death," but leave nothing of value for them. This presentation describes the innovative partnership between CHARM, Inc. (a community-based organization), the University of Florida, two public health departments, members of the community, and local churches to provide culturally-appropriate cancer prevention education to minorities living in these two counties. The goals of the project were to (1) recruit and train a cadre of lay health advisors to educate members of the community about the importance of cancer prevention measures and early screening and detection, (2) develop and implement an effective street outreach prevention program, (3) deliver cancer prevention educational literature to local church members, (4) provide cancer screening, and (5) make referrals for further evaluation and treatment. This presentation will discuss the development of the partnership, the role of each partner, and provide preliminary results of the program. In addition, the challenges and opportunities experienced will be discussed.
