Michele L Ybarra, MPH, Department of Mental Hygiene, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, 624 N. Broadway #839, Baltimore, MD 21205, 410 955 3962, mybarra@jhsph.edu and Kimberly Mitchell, PhD, University of New Hampshire, Crimes against Children Research Center, 126 Horton Hall, Durham, NH 03824.

The Youth Internet Safety Survey is a nationally representative sample of regular Internet users between the ages of 10 and 17 (N=1,501). Cumulative odds ratios (CORs) are calculated using multinomial regression, comparing four groups of youth by self-reported delinquent behavior in the previous year: no reported delinquency (N=1018), reported on-line delinquency only (N=230), reported off-line delinquency only (N=144), and reported online and offline delinquency (N=109). Differences in parent-youth interaction (i.e., parental monitoring, criticalness, and emotional attachment), reported by both parent and youth, are focused upon.

Compared to youth reporting no online or offline delinquent behaviors, youth engaging specifically in online delinquency are significantly more likely to be 14 years or older (COR=2.6, p<.001) and to be living in a large city (COR=1.5, p<.05). Youth engaging in both online and offline delinquent behavior are more likely to be older (COR=3.3, p<.001), male (COR=2.3, p<.001), report 5+ symptoms of depression (COR=1.8, p<.001) and report a failing grade (COR=2.59, p<.001). No differences in poverty, physical, or sexual abuse are observed compared to youth reporting no delinquency.

Reporting any of the three delinquent behavior types are significantly related to poor parent-youth interactions, even after adjusting for personal characteristics significantly related to reported delinquent behaviors. For example, youth report of low parental monitoring (COR=1.5, p<.05) and poor emotional attachment (COR=1.72, p<.001) are associated with reporting online-only delinquent behavior compared to youth reporting no delinquent behavior. Youth reports of each of the three parent-youth interaction characteristics and parent report of criticalness (COR=3.02, p<.05) are significantly associated with youth reporting both on and offline delinquency compared the youth reporting no delinquency.

Learning Objectives:

  • a. Describe the association between parent-youth interaction and youth reported online delinquent behavior.
  • b. Articulate the differences in youth characteristics and parent-youth interaction by delinquency type
