As the HIV Community Planning process becomes more efficient in allocating resources for Community Based Organizations (CBOs) to implement evidence-based HIV prevention programs, funded organizations will experience challenges with adhering to research protocols established through previous HIV prevention research.
The proposed presentation will provide information and solutions from a program funded to replicate the Community Level HIV Intervention/Demonstration Projects, first implemented in Long Beach, CA and findings published in the American Journal of Public Health (1999). The program targets men who have sex with men (MSM) in the County of Los Angeles.
Utilizing this model, peer outreach workers locate and identify members of the community to form a network of volunteers to distribute printed intervention materials containing role-model stories that depict real individuals from the target community who adopt, or are considering adopting to change HIV risk behaviors. These community members and business-based volunteers are recruited and trained to supplement the activities of the outreach workers by making risk reduction materials available and by acting as key informants about trends in the community.
Findings presented will focus on the methodologies utilized and modified for gathering role model stories, recruiting community based volunteers, and the implementation of the one/one outreach intervention. Additional findings will be presented from the initial year of program implementation from a convenience sample of 652 MSM patronizing bathhouses and sex clubs in the County of Los Angeles, and the results of qualitative data collected through interviews for the role model stories.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of the presentation participants will identify methodologies utilized by Community Based Organizations for replicating evidence-based HIV interventions.
By the end of this presentation participants will assess the feasibility of repricating evidence-based interventions specific to their service planning areas.
