Health administrators and practitioners know that achieving prevention outcomes is based on certain elements, including comprehensive approaches, adequate funding, sufficient timeframes, appropriate evaluation measures, and dynamic coalitions and networks. Based on this understanding, Shifting the Focus, a State government collaborative in California, developed a set of Common Prevention Principles. These Principles can be used to guide program development, policy analysis, budget changes, and administrative practice change. They can be applied in a wide range of fields, including youth development, violence prevention, community development, teen pregnancy prevention, nutrition and physical activity, early childhood development, and alcohol and drug abuse prevention. The Principles are also applicable to local work, and have been adopted by several community organizations across the State.
