Housing Matters: Final Results from the CMHS Housing Initiative for Persons with Serious Mental Illness

Debra J. Rog, PhD, Vanderbilt Institute for Public Policy Studies, 1915 I Street, NW, Suite 600, Washington, DC 20006, 202-833-3512, debra.j.rog@vanderbilt.edu

This presentation provides the final outcome results from the largest study of supported housing to date, the CMHS Housing Initiative for Persons with Serious Mental Illness. Data from six sites testing supported housing compared to a range of housing approaches in the traditional residential continuum will be presented. Outcomes examined using hierarchical linear modeling and structural equation modeling will include changes in residential stability, mental health functioning, psychiatric hospitalization and other critical incidents, consumer empowerment, housing satisfaction, isolation and community integration, and quality of life. Dr. Rog will begin the presentation with a brief overview of the Initiative, followed by a summary of the cross-site outcome analyses using 3, 6, and 12-month data. Outcome effects at 18 months will also be examined for a sub-sample of the people in the study. Preliminary analyses have shown that dramatic changes in residential stability measures and psychiatric hospitalization occur in both conditions following entry into housing, but few differences are noted between the housing groups. Inclusion of moderator variables such as age, substance abuse history, and mental health history reveal important subgroup effects, but little interaction with the housing models. Older residents on a number of outcome variables show more positive results whereas those with alcohol or mental health history have less positive outcomes on some key measures. The implications of these results for practice and further research will be noted.
