Lisa Kleppel, MPH and Doreen Bonnett, MSW. Health Solutions and Services, Northrop Grumman Information Technology, 1801 Research Boulevard, Suite 102, Rockville, MD 20850, (301) 315-2822, lkleppel@hq.row.com

This presentation discusses alcohol and medication issues among older adults. It includes a demonstration of a tutorial for professionals and one for consumers. Funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, the tutorials break new ground by making this information accessible to multiple audiences in a format readily accessible by all Web browsers. This will increase public involvement in this important public health issue. Continuing education units will be offered.

The tutorials include an overview of substance abuse and older adults, including a myths and realities quiz. They also discuss drinking guidelines, effects of alcohol and medication on older adults, screening and diagnosing alcohol problems, and recognizing other problems, such as tobacco use and use of psychoactive drugs. Case studies and practical suggestions allow the user to learn how to approach older adults whom they suspect have a problem with alcohol or medications. An overview of prevention is provided, including a slide show, and various prevention strategies and programs. The tutorials also discuss treatment and legal and ethical issues, such as problems involving Internet pharmacies.

Features include interactive quizzes, screening tools, a glossary, links to related Web sites, and lists of various resources such as clearinghouses and videos. In addition, a drug information database provides information on brand and generic names, alcohol warnings, and side effects of more than 200 prescription medications. Both tutorials include various screening tools, such as the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test-Geriatric and the Geriatric Depression Scale.
