Abstract #46917

Providing housing to persons with serious mental illness: Implications from the CMHS Housing Initiative

Robert Paulson, PhD, FMHI, University of South Florida, 13301 Bruce B. Downs Blvd, Tampa, FL 33612, (813)974-3117, rpaulson@fmhi.usf.edu

The preliminary findings from the CMHS Housing Initiative are consistent with a host of prior studies that show the dramatic impact of providing housing to people with mental illness, particularly those who have been homeless, particularly with respect to improving residential stability. More specifically, the findings from this Initiative help us understand how specific housing structures, operations, and policies have affected a variety of outcomes examined, including residential stability, mental health functioning, satisfaction, and quality of life. Dr. Paulson will serve as a discussant to this set of outcome presentations on the Initiative and discuss the implications of these findings, particularly the consistent finding that housing matters, for state and federal housing policies, as well as state and federal mental health policies.
