The Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association (GRPA), an affiliate of IPPF, has been working since 1995 to broaden its services from a focus on contraception, to an approach including sexual and reproductive health as part of a wider mission. Among the steps it has taken are: (a) in clinical services, opening a laboratory to process Pap smears and selected STI tests, offering colposcopy and cryosurgery to women with abnormal Pap results, and offering pre- and post-abortion counseling (after the procedure was legalized in 1995). GRPA’s new approach has also included training young people as peer counselors, and working with scores of lay adult community facilitators to prepare them to handle discussions of sexual health and gender issues with members of their community.

In 2002, GRPA (with support from IPPF/WHR) is carrying out two distinct analyses of its work, which will be reported on in this presentation. Social scientists from CESRA, a research group, will be compiling past reports and carrying out additional interviews and observations to determine the degree to which both staff and clients have understood and appreciated the shift in approach. Also, with assistance from a gender expert, GRPA will carry out a baseline study of its clinical services using the IPPF/WHR “Manual to Evaluate Quality of Care from a Gender Perspective.” Both the process and the products of these two studies will be included here, and will be related to a conceptual framework of organizational change in Sexual and Reproductive Health that provides broader application of this country-specific experience.
