The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) targets physicians, physician assistants, advanced practice nurses, nurses, pharmacists, and oral health professionals (“treaters”) for training programs provided by the national system of AIDS Education and Training Centers (AETCs). AETC programs are further directed to focus their training efforts primarily on mid-volume providers in specific settings who care for a small number of patients with HIV disease. Those directives and priorities frequently affect how HIV care providers access and benefit from AETC-driven training. In many rural Southern states, HIV counseling, testing, secondary prevention efforts, and treatment/care is often managed and driven by other professionals and para-professionals, identified by HRSA as "healthcare support service professionals" (HSSPs). This session will provide an overview of the application of the AETC guidelines on training for HIV care providers and suggest strategies to meet the needs of the funding agency and HIV service providers.
