Abstract #47320

Providing housing to persons with serious mental illness: Practitioner recommendations from the CMHS Housing Initiative

Lucy Kim, Center for Urban Community Services, 120 Wall Street, 25th Floor, New York, NY 10005, (212)801-3331, lucyk@cucs.org

The CMHS Housing Initiative for Persons with Serious Mental Illness has offered an opportunity to explore the structural and operational dimensions of a range of housing approaches across the nation and to identify key subgroups in the population that may fare relatively better or worse in these approaches. The four presentations preceding this one outline what has been learned about the housing and selected population groups and offer a solid foundation for guiding practice. Ms. Kim, a representative form the Housing Initiative’s Consumer Advisory Panel who both lives and works in a supported housing program, will highlight the findings that directly bear on the day-to-day practices of these housing programs. In particular, Ms. Kim will emphasize the need for providers to have greater sensitivity to various operational features of housing, the individual needs and backgrounds of their tenants, and the role that services can play in helping people live and maintain their housing.
