Tova Wolking, MPH, Partnership for the Public's Health, Public Health Institute, 505 14th Street Suite 810, Oakland, CA 94110 and Abhishek Tiwari, MPH, Long Beach Community Health Council, Long Beach Community Health Council, 3761 Stocker Street Suite 201, Los Angeles, CA 90008, 323-295-9372, twolking@partnershipPH.org.

This presentation will delineate the process for creating a relevant leadership training series that is useful for community residents. Discussion will include ways to strike a balance between trainings that enhance an individual’s skill set and trainings that enhance the internal capacity of the group as a whole. Presenters will describe how concrete tools can be incorporated into training programs that “reach” resident leaders and will conclude with a discussion about successes in making the transition from training to action. Health leaders are integral in planning and implementing community health projects with the City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human services. Co-presenters include a health leader, a resident of the Central Neighborhood Improvement Strategy Area in Long Beach, and the project manager for the Partnership for the Public’s Health at Long Beach Community Health Council (LBCHC). This presentation is based on the successes and challenges of the Health Leadership Training Program in California, where community residents have participated in a number of training sessions offered through a collaboration between the City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services, Community Partners Council and Long Beach Community Health Council (LBCHC). All are participants in the Partnership for the Public's Health, a five-year, $40 million initiative committed to fostering broad community involvement in the development of an effective, responsive and sustainable public health system, through equal partnership of community collaborative groups and health agencies.
