This presentation will describe a collaborative project between NIOSH, Alameda County Public Authority and SEIU to identify risk factors for musculoskeletal disorders among home care workers and develop recommendations for reducing risk. Project activities included focus groups of home care workers conducted in English, Spanish and Cantonese; site visits; interviews with representatives of organizations that serve consumers and workers; a training of training program for home care worker/leaders to train other workers to identify hazards, develop solutions, and advocate effectively for needed changes; and meetings with key decision-makers to discuss recommendations for organizational and policy changes. We will describe our experience designing focus groups appropriate for a population that includes a large number of immigrant workers. We also describe how researchers conducted research activities in ways that involved worker and consumer groups and resulted in recommendations that would assist our community partners in achieving their own objectives. Finally, we will review project findings, including technical and programmatic recommendations.
