During FY 2001-2002 the University of Florida Health Sciences Center Libraries (HSCL) received an NNLM subcontract to teach the public health professionals to effectively use the Internet to search of National Library of Medicine resources and find Internet health resources intended both for public health practitioners/workers and consumers.
The University of Florida HSCL provide outreach services to health providers throughout the 37 counties in northern Florida. These counties -- among the most rural in the state -- are served by the North Florida AHEC Program. Working with Big Bend AHEC and the Florida Department of Health, the HSCL implemented this pilot project in Big Bend AHEC's fourteen counties.
The goal of training was to teach public health professionals who have limited access to print sources to find and use the information sources on the Web. Training sessions focused on the use of PubMed, Internet search engines and websites from the CDC and other organizations involved in public health and access to documents through websites and Loansome Doc.
Learning objectives, handouts and training calendar were constructed. Continuing education credits were obtained for training sessions and training sessions were conducted in county health departments during 2002.
This poster will report on how the project impacted the ability of these public health workers to meet the information-related objectives of Healthy People 2010. We will describe the project and its outcomes and identify successes and areas for improvement when the training is extended to other AHEC centers in the North Florida region.
