Disability is associated with various secondary conditions, both medical and social. Negative attitudes and discrimination can result in social secondary conditions such as isolation, unemployment, and poverty. Negative attitudes may also contribute to maltreatment of people with disabilities. Although often overlooked as a secondary condition, maltreatment has profound negative impacts and can lead to secondary disabilities, loss of independence, and death. This presentation discusses negative attitudes, discrimination, and maltreatment reported by participants in a survey of Oregonians with disabilities. Of 338 respondents, one quarter to one-third reported problems with other's attitudes at home, school, and work. Nearly 60% reported problematic attitudes in public places. Almost as many participants reported discrimination. The type of maltreatment most commonly reported was verbal/psychological abuse, with the highest rates of abuse occurring in public places and at home. Neglect of routine needs, medical neglect, and financial exploitation were also reported frequently. Physical abuse was reported least often; nevertheless, 11% of the survey respondents indicated being physically abused at home. Survey respondents' experiences of maltreatment, negative attitudes, and discrimination will be discussed in the context of their responses to other issues covered by the survey, representativeness of the sample, and previous research.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, participants will be able to
