Challenges to the field of public health such as workforce shortages, bioterrorism, constant change in the political and economic environment, and organizational transformation require public health leadership. Mentoring, coaching, and peer consultation and succession planning are critical 21st Century approaches to building public health leadership capacity. The Center for Health Leadership & Practice of the Public Health Institute is a leadership training, consultation and resource center serving domestic and international health leaders and organizations. The authors will discuss best practices and lessons learned in the design and implementation of the Center's national and California-based coaching, peer consultation, succession planning, and mentoring programs and initiatives.
