The use of story telling has a long tradition that has been shown to support learning from peer to peer and inter-generationally. It has also been used throughout history as a valuable way to shape values and behaviors. The Community Arts Theater Troupe (CATT) was formed as a result of discussions between MCP Hahnemann University, College of Nursing and Health Professions Health Center personnel and community members about important social issues affecting the community and the need for creative approaches to address these issues. The purpose of CATT is to provide an opportunity for students to learn to utilize creative arts to express themselves and convey a story. CATT partnered with the William Penn Cluster of the Philadelphia School district for a project that centered on adolescent sexuality and the role of parents. This project , involving story telling, theater and play writing, was implemented at Elverson Middle School during the 2000-2001 school year. The intent was to provide a forum for students and their families to discuss social and health issues in a forum supported by health professionals. This model, which utilizes story telling as a means to generate discussion, is easily transferable to a variety of settings and populations.
