Factors Associated with Cancer Screening Behavior among Korean American Elderly Man.

It has been known that Asian populations have lower incidence of prostate and colon cancer than American. One of possible reason for that is the high consumption of plant foods in Asian countries. Korean Americans are not in that boundary any more. They have more chance to eat food high in animal fat than populations in Korea. The sample of 73 Korean American Elderly men residing in greater Baltimore, Maryland, metropolitan area participated in a cross-sectional study on factors associated with cancer screening behavior. Only 17.8% of the sample had test for colon cancer and only 11% had blood test for prostate cancer. It has been found that Korean American elderly underutilized health care facilities as well as not getting regular cancer screening exam. 45.3% of Korean American Elderly Man overweighed and 44.0% of them had high blood cholesterol. 93% of them speak little or none English, 35.6% of their income is less than $10,000 and 71.2% of them cannot go to American hospital without help. Those seemed likely to make them inaccessible to health care facilities.
