After discovering that many cafeteria meal choices are over 50% fat and approximately 20% of American children are now overweight, "Wally the Well-Fed Watermelon" is on the run searching for well-balanced meals in rural school cafeterias. During this presentation you will meet Wally and examine his application of the PRECEDE-PROCEED model for evaluating and revising school meal programs. Run with Wally as he shares his learner-centered, hands-on curriculum unit for teaching positive nutrition habits in a rural southeastern school system. Hand-outs and lesson plans will be provided.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of the session, the participants

will be able to

A. Identify the statistical relevance of the need for nutrition education in the public school system.
B. Apply nutrition objectives in the classroom.
C. Evaluate the use of the PRECEDE-PROCEED model in evaluating and revising school meal programs.
