Academia and Public Health Practice Working Together to Enhance Environmental Health Capacity

This presentation will highlight the Johns Hopkins Center of Excellence in Community Environmental Health Practice’s collaborative efforts to enhance state and local environmental public health agency capacity. The Center, funded through a cooperative agreement with the Association of Schools of Public Health and the National Center for Environmental Health, will use the essential environmental health services as a framework to: 1) strengthen the community environmental health workforce through state of the art training; 2) develop practical surveillance tools to anticipate, track, and prevent environmental health hazards; 3) provide technical assistance in responding to community environmental health problems; and 4) advance research to enhance prevention and measure program effectiveness. The presentation will describe the Center’s efforts to identify and address training needs and gaps in essential services through competency based education and training; consultation and response; and research, surveillance and evaluation.
