Public health systems compared: Sweden and the United States

Collectively the authors have more than 60 years working in, teaching about and studying the public health systems of their respective countries.  A review and comparison of the public health systems of the two countries is presented including discussing the mortality rates of leading causes of death in each country.  In an effort to eliminate any difference due to the northern location of Sweden, a comparison with three upper mid-western states (Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin) is presented.

 

Included is a discussion of the methods used to provide public health services, services being provided, types of agencies and levels of government involved, methods of funding these services, governance structures and effectiveness in reducing morbidity and mortality rates.
