For almost 30 years, the Division of Reproductive Health of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been providing contraceptive logistics assistance to family planning programs in 65 countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Eastern Europe. Millions of condoms, oral contraceptive cycles, IUDs, and vials of injectable later, what have we learned about how best to produce, order, transport, store, and record contraceptive products? This presentation will describe seven lessons about managing a contraceptive logistics system that have emerged over three decades of technical assistance (funded by USAID, and most recently conducted in collaboration with the DELIVER project of John Snow, Inc.), including: A well-run contraceptive logistics system is almost invisible, but mustn’t be taken for granted; Contraceptive logistics sounds simple, but doing it right is complex; The contraceptive supply chain is only as strong as its weakest link (and that includes the top link); and Never forget who the contraceptives are for -- the family planning clients. Examples of actual logistics situations, problems, and solutions will also be presented, and new logistics challenges will be discussed.
