Emergency contraception still remains largely unavailable for women in developing nations even though it has existed for over 30 years and could prevent millions of unwanted pregnancies worldwide. In 2001, IPPF affiliates in Brazil, Chile, Colombia, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela began plans for the implementation of a project to: 1) strengthen their institutional capacity to integrate the provision of EC into SRH services; 2) increase awareness of and access to emergency contraception; and 3) increase knowledge about effective strategies for promoting emergency contraception.

In the context of this initiative, IPPF/WHR has explored how to best integrate EC provision into existing efforts in the areas of GBV, youth and HIV/STI prevention. Some of the key questions explored include: Will men insist on not using a condom if they know their partners can use emergency contraception? What is the best strategy to provide EC to women living in situations of domestic violence? How can we promote EC within the context of dual-protection and HIV/STI prevention?

This presentation will 1) compare and contrast the different strategies used by the affiliates to integrate EC and 2) explore the need to integrate EC within a broader sexual and reproductive health and rights framework encompassing GBV, HIV/STI and youth.
