Nancy C. Sharts-Hopko, PhD, RN, FAAN and Suzanne C Smeltzer, RN, EdD, FAAN. College of Nursing, Villanova University, 800 Lancaster Avenue, Villanova, PA 19085-1690, 610-519-4906, nancy.sharts-hopko@villanova.edu

The purpose of this qualitative study was to determine how women with MS attempt to influence their health care providers (HCPs) in the area of osteoporosis risk-reduction. After IRB approval, open-ended questions were posed to 3 focus groups and to individuals who were physically unable to participate in the groups. Validation of findings by the participants, themselves, is pending. The women identified factors that promote their seeking information and services needed to prevent and manage osteoporosis, including use of existing resources, assertiveness and networking. In addition, the women proposed strategies for reaching out to women who may be unaware of resources, particularly less mobile women. Greater efforts are needed in the areas of dissemination of information, access and promotion of awareness among HCPs regarding osteoporosis and women with MS. The results of this study will be used to identify and test strategies for facilitating communication between women with MS and their HCPs.
